WJO’s education programs are integral to our mission. We share our love of music with students in workshops and residencies that cover a wide range of topics in jazz performance. We further our commitment to education by encouraging students to attend our concerts with the very low student ticket price of only $5. Our aim is to inspire students and instill a lifelong love of making and listening to music.
One of the most important experiences a developing instrumentalist can have is interacting with stronger, more experienced musicians. In our education programs, students do exactly that by spending time with and playing alongside WJO’s professionals.
WJO offers both multi-day residencies and one-day workshops. Our school visits are individually designed around the level and needs of the students and can include any combination of WJO musicians, from small group to the full Orchestra. Teaching days can be consecutive or spread out. Each residency or workshop can end with a concert or assembly featuring the student group as well as WJO or members of WJO.
We offer both full orchestra and small group instruction.
Ideas for curriculum include the following:
Ensemble playing, section playing
Reading the chart, interpretation, articulation
Rhythm section in the big band
Small group playing
Instrumental focus
Improvisation, soloing
Preparing a chart or charts for performance
As a performing orchestra, WJO commissions arrangements for its concerts. Some of these are appropriate for school bands to perform and our arrangers can provide an invaluable and unique perspective in rehearsing students. We also have an original commission for two jazz orchestras – your student band and WJO – to perform together.
Some students are not ready for much theoretical information or are just beginners on their instruments. Whatever their level, we offer a positive and inspiring experience that can motivate them to enjoy and actively participate in their school jazz ensembles.
